AI coding tools make writing code faster. 45% of developers using AI tools very frequently deploy to production daily or faster. That's a genuine acceleration.

What Happens When You Accelerate Part of a Pipeline
If a manufacturing line speeds up one station without speeding up the others, work piles up at the next station. The bottleneck moves; the total throughput doesn't necessarily improve. What does increase is pressure on the people at the newly overloaded station.
Software development has a similar structure. Code generation is one station. Code review, testing, deployment, incident response, documentation, and operational upkeep are the others.
AI accelerated code generation. It didn't accelerate the rest. The bottleneck moved downstream. The pressure concentrated on the human steps that remain manual — and those steps are still being performed by engineers who are now expected to maintain faster overall delivery velocity because the headline metric (code written) improved.
That's the burnout mechanism. Not overwork in the abstract. A specific structural mismatch between acceleration at one layer and unchanged manual burden at another, with human beings absorbing the difference.
The Manual Work That Didn't Go Away
I lose time every day not to writing code but to the overhead between writing. Checking what state a Jira ticket is in. Updating GitHub with context that Jira should already know. Reading Slack threads to reconstruct a picture that should have been assembled automatically.
None of this is inherent to the work. It's structural — an information flow problem. The tools have the data. The data doesn't move between them without a human carrying it.

When AI triples code output, the same senior reviewer is now looking at three times the volume. The choices are: spend three times as long reviewing, review less carefully, or let things merge that shouldn't. In practice, some combination of all three happens, with the quality cost showing up later and the time cost showing up immediately.
This is not a problem with the individual engineers. It's a design problem. The review process wasn't designed for this volume, and there's no technical shortcut to genuine code review the way there's a shortcut to code generation.
What Would Actually Fix It
The solution is not "less AI coding." The speed is real and the use case is legitimate.
The solution is treating the downstream manual load as a design constraint, not a natural consequence to be absorbed. Specifically:
Automate the coordination overhead. Every manual status update, every human-carried status signal between tools, is a removable friction point. The information exists in the systems. The routing logic is deterministic. The implementation is not technically complex — it requires treating coordination as a first-class engineering problem rather than an afterthought.
Scale review capacity before scaling generation. The productivity case for AI coding tools improves when the downstream review capacity is in place to handle the output. Organizations that add AI coding without investing in testing automation, code review tooling, and deployment pipeline reliability are trading long-term quality for short-term output numbers.
Measure delivery, not generation. If the metric is code written per day, optimizing code generation makes sense even when the downstream pipeline can't absorb it. If the metric is features shipped reliably at sustainable pace, the constraint becomes obvious and the investment decisions change.
What Burnout Signals
Burnout is diagnostic. When engineers at AI-accelerated companies burn out, it's usually not because the work itself became harder. It's because the expectations changed faster than the structure.
Structure is what prevents human emotion and human capacity limits from determining how work flows. When structure is absent, people fill the gap. When people fill the gap faster than their capacity allows, you get burnout.
The fix isn't a wellness program. It's the boring engineering work of automating the coordination layer so that people are handling exceptions, not routine.
