FOMO-Driven Adoption Always Ends Here
SiliconAngle reported in April 2026 that rapid innovation in AI coding and autonomous agents is forcing a push for enterprise "order and control." The pattern: companies adopted AI development tools quickly, often without a coherent strategy, and are now discovering they need governance frameworks, security reviews, and process structure to manage what they deployed.
This is the second act of FOMO-driven adoption. It is entirely predictable.
How this always starts
The first act runs roughly like this: a new tool category demonstrates real productivity gains. Early adopters publish results. Leadership sees competitor announcements. There's a push to adopt fast — "we can't afford to fall behind." Adoption happens across teams with variable readiness, inconsistent process integration, and minimal governance.
This produces visible short-term velocity. Code gets written faster. Demos go well. Metrics that measure output volume look good.
Then the second act: the code is in production. The team grows more dependent on tools they don't fully understand. Security reviews flag AI-generated code that introduces subtle vulnerabilities. Someone realizes they don't know what their AI agent did or why. A compliance team asks what code was generated autonomously and where it was deployed. Nobody has a clean answer.
Now they need control. They need order. They're buying governance tools to manage the chaos of the adoption tools.
The collapse pattern
I start every design by asking: where will technical debt accumulate? Where will bugs become untraceable?
For AI coding agents, the answers are straightforward if you think about it before adoption rather than after:
Debt accumulates where generated code wasn't understood. If engineers accepted AI suggestions without building a mental model of what was generated, there's now code in production that the team can't reason from. When that code fails, the debugging process is slower because nobody has the context to know why the code does what it does.
Bugs become untraceable where agent actions weren't logged. If an autonomous agent made changes — filed issues, updated configurations, modified CI scripts — and those actions weren't attributed to a specific decision with a specific rationale, the history of the system is now opaque. "The agent did it" is not a useful entry in a postmortem.
Security vulnerabilities appear at AI trust boundaries. Generated code can look correct while encoding assumptions that don't hold in the specific deployment environment. Standard security review processes weren't designed for reviewing code that was generated by a system rather than written by a person with domain knowledge.
None of this is speculative. It's the natural consequence of adopting tools that change the source and nature of code without changing the review and governance processes around it.
The mispriced confidence
I have made this mistake myself, in a different form. On a freelance project, I underestimated execution difficulty — not because I didn't know the technical domain, but because my internal model of the situation was more accurate than I realized. I was confident in my ability to execute and underestimated the compounding cost of the gaps in my understanding of the specific context.
The failure mode isn't ignorance. It's confident partial knowledge. You know enough to proceed, not enough to anticipate where it breaks.
Enterprise AI adoption looks exactly like this. Teams know enough about AI coding tools to deploy them and see early productivity. They don't know enough about their specific systems, security requirements, compliance constraints, and organizational context to anticipate where the tools will produce problems.
The push for "order and control" is what happens after the partial knowledge ran forward and the gaps showed up.
What structural adoption looks like
The teams that don't end up in this position are not the ones that avoided AI tools. They're the ones that adopted with a model of consequence.
Before adopting any AI coding agent, the structural questions are: what does this agent write, and who reviews it, and how? What does it change, and how is that change attributed and auditable? What assumptions does it encode that might not hold in our specific environment? What happens when it's wrong, and how will we know?
These are not novel governance questions. They're the same questions you'd ask before giving any new contributor commit access. The difference is that AI agents are faster and more opaque than human contributors, so the gap between "this is working" and "this is a problem" is smaller.
Speed without structural understanding creates collapse patterns nobody can debug later. This was true before AI. AI made it possible to accumulate the patterns faster.
The second-order effect
The enterprises now investing in AI governance and control are spending twice. They spent on adoption tools, and they're now spending on control infrastructure to manage the adoption. If the governance work had been scoped before the adoption, some of it would be the same investment — but done once, before the chaos, rather than after.
This is the hidden tax of FOMO-driven adoption: the rework. The second act isn't just a governance problem — it's a resource problem. Engineering time spent building retrospective guardrails is time not spent building product.
The companies that will come out of the 2026 AI agent backlash in good shape are the ones that slow down now, understand what they've built and what they haven't, and make governance decisions deliberately rather than reactively.
The ones that continue at maximum speed will have a third act. It involves production incidents and hard conversations about how this happened.
